phase 1:
sketching & drafting
concept:
I started by mapping four touchstones of Puerto Rican culture, the flag, Three Kings Day, Flor de Maga, and San Juan, then sketched how each could translate into a stamp.
first draft:
Each sketch became a first-draft stamp, using a shared night-sky background and stamp border to tie the four designs into one series.
phase 2:
new path & redirection
new direction:
Between my first and final designs, I started over with a more sophisticated concept: faceless portraits of Puerto Rican figures who've shaped American culture, set against the flag.
back to the original:
The portraits looked more polished, but the happy, vibrant mood I set out to capture was gone. I returned to my original illustrated stamps and refined them into the final series.
